What to put on a dog tag

A dog tag has one job: getting a lost dog home fast. With two short lines to work with, put the most useful details first.

  • Your phone number. It's the quickest way for a finder to reach you. Use a mobile you always answer.
  • Your dog's name. It helps a finder calm your dog and helps a vet or shelter confirm they've got the right owner.
  • Nothing you'd mind a stranger reading. Skip your home address if you're not required to show it, and skip anything private.

Keep each line short so it stays easy to read. On a Sniff & Bark collar the engraving sits on the buckle, so there's no hanging tag to jingle, snag or fall off.

Dog collar engraving questions

What should I put on my dog's tag?

Your phone number matters most, because it's how a finder reaches you. On a Sniff & Bark buckle, line 1 is your dog's name and line 2 is your phone number. Keep both short so every character stays easy to read.

Should I put my dog's name on the tag?

Most owners do. A name helps a finder calm your dog and helps vets and shelters match them to you. Some owners leave it off because they worry a stranger could use it to call the dog. Either way, a phone number is the line to include.

Is a dog ID tag a legal requirement?

In the US, rules are set by states and local governments, and many require a rabies or license tag on the collar. In the UK, the Control of Dogs Order 1992 requires a dog in a public place to wear a collar showing the owner's name and address. Check with your local authority.

How many characters fit on the buckle?

Two lines of up to 14 characters each. Line 1 takes letters, numbers, spaces and hyphens. Line 2 takes numbers, spaces and hyphens, which suits a phone number. The preview above shows the approximate size and spacing.

Does a microchip replace an ID tag?

No. A microchip needs a scanner at a vet or shelter, while a tag can be read by anyone who finds your dog. Vets and animal welfare groups recommend both.

Which Sniff & Bark designs can be engraved?

Every collar shown on this page: classic collars, bow tie and flower collars, plus the collars in our collar and leash sets and mega bundles. The engraving goes on the collar buckle. Harnesses and leashes aren't engraved.

Which fonts can I choose?

Two: Indie Flower, a relaxed handwritten style, and Amatic SC Bold, a tall, narrow hand-drawn style that fits longer names. Switch between them above to compare.
